Oracle Academy and ALICE

Oracle Education Foundation launched its program in India at KV Malleswaram where I was the Principal. KVS was its partner in India. Those initial days it was known as Think.Com. Teachers like Ms Kamal Peter excelled in this tool and they integrated the same in to their teaching learning process. It was a small beginning and turned out to be a big celebration for both teachers and students. KVs were the first to adopt and encourage this program.

Later it took the avatar of ThinkQuest.org. Project based learning became popular among the teachers. OEF has got the full time support of Ms Kamal Peter There was no looking back. OEF trained the teachers in countries like US and Singapore. Many were trained as Master trainers. Many Excellent projects were born in different parts of the country. Many competitions and programs were planned and executed by Ms Kamal. Dr Kasturirangan, Dr.C.N.R.Rao, Dr.Madhavan Nair, and many scientists from Raman Research Institutes were involved in her programes. International Year of Chemistry celebrations concluded with Dr.APJ Abdulkalamji interacting with the students of different schools of Bangalore.

ThinkQuest international competition was a centre of attraction for both teachers and students.BGS NPS was one among the top 10 schools who produced maximum number of projects. But the news of discontinuation of Thinkquest programe made us very sad. The enthusiasm came down with a question mark." WHY ?"

Ms Kamal was there to answer .."ALICE...ALICE".

It was on 18th of August 2012 , The training started at 8.45 am by Ms Kamal Peter and was  assisted by Ms Madurya.  Along with the teachers there were 5 students also . It was a different tool and everybody was eager to learn. Ms Kamal being a born teacher makes it a point - how to integrate the same in their class rooms. At the end of the day, teachers realised that again it is a good initiative by Oracle Academy. One will enjoy this programme if properly understood and implemented.

Thanks to Oracle Academy.

When Kamal started the introductory class she took us to a different magical world of ALICE. All the teachers found Alice to be magical device. The move, roll, vehicle, markers,if and else, variable ...........................wow what an effect they create . The Integration in the classroom will create a lot of enjoy among students. One step ahead in ICT adoption.

I also sat with a child like curiuosity to unravel the mystery of Alice. Truly it is a wonderland.

What is Alice?

Creating Movies and Games as a Motivation for learning Programming thinking
In a global environment that is increasingly dependent on computing, it is critical that our students should be familiar with programming concepts.
Introductory Computer Science courses often use examples and assignments from the business computing and systems building domains. These examples are intended as a foundation for computer science concepts in a domain that makes the problems relevant to students, yet many students do not begin to see the relevance of their computer science classes until they are ready for college.
Carnegie Mellon has created a programming environment, Alice, that allows students to learn basic computer science while creating animated movies and simple video games where students control the behaviors of 3D objects and characters in a virtual world.
In Alice, students construct programs by dragging and dropping tiles that represent words in a programming language; Alice removes the possibility for syntax errors, a common source of frustration for beginning programmers. Students can watch their programs execute, which enables students to see where they have made mistakes. Unlike many programming environments for novices, Alice allows students to gain experience with all the programming constructs typically taught in programming courses.

Life at BGSNPS

The work culture under the leadership of Sri.S.A.Nair Principal is inspirational.

I find a lot of it as expressed so beautifully by Buddha

The master of the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his education and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which; he simply pursues his vision of excellence in whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing.
To him he is always doing both.”Buddha

Spirit of Learning Alice

“If you hear a voice within you say, ‘You cannot paint,’ then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced” – Vincent Van Gogh

Have you feared computer programming? I also did it till I discovered I loved working on Alice ,which is actually programming. Programming without knowing programming.......................Paint without knowing painting. That is what each of our actions should be .

So on Aug 18 .we are there teachers at BGSNPS, Bannerghatta ,Bangalore .Madhurya and myself will  lead you in the Alice land of sheer " Wonder".
